Sixteen of SERC’s Further Education/Vocational Education & Training students will be jetting off around the globe thanks to funding secured through the new Turing Scheme.

Professional Cookery students will travel to Knoxville College, USA where they will participate in a unique initiative that is tackling food waste and food security. The students will then manage their Project Based Learning enterprise “College Kitchen” at the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations showcasing an Irish Street Food concept, whilst sharing this best practice approach to learning.

Heading east, Production Arts students will travel to Turkmen State Institute for Culture, Turkmenistan where they will work with their peers to engage in a variety of practical workshops culminating in a joint theatrical production.

Going even further east, a cohort of Travel and Tourism students will travel to Toyama College, Japan. Since the start of 2021 the students have collaborated on a virtual exchange to understand their respective countries, cultures and languages. The Turing project will build on this foundation, facilitating an in-person exchange where students will collaborate to create a joint tourism project showcasing the best of Japan and Northern Ireland.

SERC is committed to providing students with opportunities to study or work abroad to improve their employability skills through exposure to new working practices, cultures, and the global marketplace.  Erasmus+ has been the cornerstone of SERC’s international mobility activity for the past 13 years but, thanks to Turing, students can continue to broaden their horizons by participating in global mobilities.

Ken Webb, SERC Principal and Chief Executive said, “We are delighted to have secured the Turing funding in its inaugural year, underlining our commitment to international student mobility.  Our aim is to improve the quality and relevance of education and training providing opportunities for students to improve the personal, social and employability skills valued by employers. About a quarter of our students are from disadvantaged backgrounds with many never having travelled abroad. The Turing Scheme will be invaluable in supporting SERC’s commitment to widening participation by providing a unique opportunity for those students that would otherwise be unable to avail of international travel or work/study experiences.”

World of Possibilities: Sixteen SERC  students will have the opportunity to jet off around the globe thanks to funding secured through the new Turing Scheme.   The Travel and Tourism, Production Arts and Food Services students will be  following in the footsteps of Level 3 Animal Management students who enjoyed international experience at the Club Real de Polo in central Barcelona, assisting with mucking-out, grooming, exercising and overall care of the health and welfare requirements of thoroughbred horses at a top-quality stable yard back in 2019.
