Ryan Kamlian (18), from Bangor, who is currently studying a Level 2 Traineeship in Health and Social Care at South Eastern Regional College, has taken the first step on his path to become a Nurse.

Ryan completed his GCSEs, and when considering his future education decided on a Level 2 Traineeship in Health and Social Care at SERC’s Newtownards campus. After completing this one year course, Ryan plans to progress onto Level 3 which will take an additional two years. His ultimate goal is to gain a degree in Nursing.

Ryan felt this pathway was the best option for him, rather than going down the traditional A–Level route. Not only has he gained practical advice from tutors with different backgrounds within the industry, he has also been able to get an insight into various roles within the Health and Social Care sector.

Ryan says, “The best part about this course is the tutors who are very experienced in the field. I enjoy all modules, but my favourite is Anatomy and Physiology. I also enjoy the fact that I am learning different areas of one subject. It is easier to learn, and I don't have to juggle three or four different subjects.”

Reflecting on his experience so far at SERC, Ryan commented, “SERC is a great place to study and until you give it a try you don't know that it can be a better way as an alternative to A-Levels.”

Ryan concludes, “It will take me a year longer to complete training to be a nurse, but it works out the same as someone who has taken a Gap Year after A-Levels”
