Robert Donnan (19) from Newtownards, came to SERC following his GCSEs at St Columbanus College, Bangor. After successfully completing the BTEC Level 3 in IT, Robert progressed to the Foundation Degree in Computing.
Robert said, “I was planning to do A levels, but following a visit to see what was on offer I decided progressing to College was the best option for me. The lecturers are excellent, and I have made good friends at College. Successfully completing the Level 3 in IT helped me decide to stay on to progress to higher education with SERC.
“The Foundation Degree in Computing has given me a good insight in the various elements of computing including programming and network technology and has helped me develop the organisational and personal qualities required for the IT industry.
Robert added, “My time at SERC has given me the confidence to be part of the student enterprise FixIT and I have been volunteering my IT skills alongside other students and staff to prepare computers being loaded to students so they can study at home during lockdown. This has involved installing operating systems, configuring encryption and security systems which is helping me develop qualities needed, not just for IT, but life in general.
“I would recommend SERC to anyone wishing to gain a new perspective on education and a better understanding in the subject they wish to study. The atmosphere in the College and on course is really positive. At SERC people talk to you as an individual and are really kind – that’s certainly been my experience of the IT team and staff around each Campus.
