SERC continues to build on the We Can Engineer It project with additional funding secured through the Engineering Education Grant Scheme. This will seek to address our engagement work findings, essentially that there is a lack of encouragement from schools and parents, and a lack of female role models in the engineering workplace.

Over the past few months the project has hosted a series of family workshops to raise awareness of engineering as a career route for primary school age girls, which included resources for their parents with ideas on how to support their daughters in developing their enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects.

Strong positive female role models working in the industry are essential to communicating the pathways and careers in engineering for aspiring female engineers, so we are delighted to share two from:

Katlyn Taylor - Katlyn completed a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering with SERC 2020.  She is a Production Apprentice with Magellan Aerospace, based in Greyabbey.   Katlyn shares how her interest in crafts fits with her career in engineering.

Emma Swann - Emma is Graduate Optical Engineer with Andor Technology Ltd, a developer and manufacturer of high performance light measuring solutions, based in Belfast. Emma shares how her interest in star gazing led her to a career in engineering.

Find out how you can unlock your future with SERC. Come along to our Open Evening for Full Time students from 4.00pm – 7.00pm on Wednesday 8 March 2023 at the College’s Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses.
