Twenty-year-old (20) Matthew Weiniger, from Bangor came to SERC to study Level 3 Performing Arts, and after a successful and enjoyable two years on the course, he progressed to the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Performing Arts at the College’s SPACE Campus.

Whilst researching higher education courses, Matthew reviewed the SERC website, where he was immediately intrigued by the Performing Arts course and what it could offer him. Speaking about his course, Matthew said: “My favourite thing about the HND in Performing Arts is the practical element. Many other performing arts courses are coursework heavy, whilst this one is very practical and allows you to do and achieve so much away from the classroom, particularly in the theatre and dance areas which is fantastic. I have met a lot of people and made new friends, which has made my experience really fun.”

Matthew speaks highly of many aspects of his course and the College, however he did want to give a special mention to one lecturer. “My lecturer, Steven Lee has been incredible.  He has been our course co-ordinator for the HND and has helped both myself and my classmates through everything.  Honestly, the way his mind works just inspires me to work harder and match his level.”

Speaking about his future plans, Matthew said: “After I finish my HND, I plan to use the learning agreement that has been set up by the College to transfer into the degree programme at the University of Sunderland and get my full degree there. I’d like to then enter the industry through contacts that I will make at the University.”

Matthew concluded by saying: “If you are interested in doing Performing Arts have a look round at the different courses available, but once you see what SERC can offer you, you’ll see that it’s the right choice. I think SERC is absolutely great, both the Level 3 and HND courses have helped me so much in building my confidence and skillsets."

“I would 100% recommend SERC. Both courses have been so good and the HND, in particular, has given me a lot of opportunities - for example we went to London, and are going to Barcelona later this year for work experience.”

Find out how you can unlock your future with SERC. Come along to our Open Evening for Full Time students from 4.00pm – 7.00pm on Wednesday 8 March 2023 at the College’s Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses.
