A recommendation to study at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) has taken construction student Jack Mussen to new heights in unlocking his career potential.

Jack (21), from Belfast spoke on his time at SERC, saying;

“After I finished my GCSEs at Sullivan Upper School, I went on to Belfast Met to start a course in Aeronautical Engineering in 2020, which ended up not working out due to the pressures of Covid. After this, I had started working as a Quantity Surveyor, and it was actually the people who I worked with that encouraged me to go to SERC and get my qualifications and training that could help me progress further in this field. SERC offered the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment at its Bangor campus, which suited what I wanted to learn, so I knew it was the right choice for me.”

He continues, “I am currently in my second year of this course.  I would say my favourite thing about it has been the practical side, such as going on site visits and getting to use surveying equipment on different areas of land. I don’t like sitting in a classroom all the time, so this course has been really great in letting me get a lot of practical experience to learn things that I will be able to put into practice in the future. The tutors on the course have been very good, and I can always speak freely with them, as well as the student support service and the Students Union, who always take on board anything that I have to say.”

“Although I live further away from the campus than most people which means I have to get a bus and a train to get to Bangor, it has definitely been worth it because it has been a great experience overall, and I have really enjoyed my time here. After I finish my course, I hope to go on to Liverpool University to study Quantity Surveying, and I look forward to where this will take me going forward. My advice for anyone who is interested in doing construction at SERC would be to go for it, especially if they want to get a good level of practical experience. SERC is a great place to study, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.”
