Local school children proved that they have the recipe for success after they successfully completed a 6-week Junior Chef School programme held at SERC’s Bangor and Lisburn campuses.

The Junior Chef School is aimed at secondary school pupils years 9, 10 and 11 and provides a great start for those interested in a career in hospitality and culinary arts.  The Saturday morning classes provided an engaging opportunity for the children to improve their culinary abilities, learn about possible career paths in the industry, make new friends and sample a taste of college life.

Over the 6 weeks, the young people developed their culinary skills, cooked up a wide range of dishes including chicken curry, braised rice, chocolate brownies, fresh pasta and bolognaise sauce, pizza, focaccia bread and lemon drizzle cake.

SERC Director of Strategic Planning Heather McKee said “Young people don’t always know what courses or learning opportunities are available here at SERC. These sessions will give young people the opportunity to experience college life within a casual setting.”

SERC Lecturer from the School of Hospitality, Management, Tourism and Languages Ian Thompson said “The budding chefs did extremely well and were really enthusiastic throughout the course. They displayed some great culinary skills and produced some very tasty dishes. The Junior Chef School has been a success and I look forward to seeing some of the students again in the future at SERC”
