Travel and Tourism

A qualification in the Travel and Tourism industry can open many doors to many different career possibilities. Former SERC student Sam Bridges found that out when he studied level 3 Travel and Tourism.

Sam was a keen football enthusiast and with the help of his lecturers Mary and Colum, he was able to turn his passion and hobby into a career. “I started the BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism at SERC in 2011, and I believe I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for the course and the lecturers I met at SERC. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and had no definite career plan, but I thought the Travel and Tourism course at SERC offered enough scope to lead into a number of different pathways that were of interest to me.”

“The Travel and Tourism course at SERC has proved brilliant for me and I would encourage anyone who is thinking about going to the College to include it as one of their options. There are so many different events and sectors which depend on travel and tourism and of course you can progress to university as well. It was a great programme which mixed classroom with study trips which were a lot of fun. I met some of my best friends at SERC.

“It’s been several years since I finished the course, but I keep in touch with the team and have been back to talk to students about my pathway. It is a great course and I would certainly recommend it.”

Former student Hannah McCoy spoke about her experience with SERC’s level 3 Travel and Tourism Course “I have always been interested in travelling, and this course gave me the chance to explore various career paths that surround it. This is a very interactive course; we have received talks from various people in the industry and we have had amazing class trips to hot tourist spots in like Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast and the activity centre in Dublin. I had the opportunity to go to Tenerife through the Erasmus programme offered at SERC and I am excited to travel and learn more about different cultures.”

Chloe Hamilton former HNC Travel and Tourism spoke about the course and how it helped her “This course has really improved my skills both personally and professionally; my self-confidence has grown and participating in group projects means I can work well as part of a team. During this course we got to visit the Giant’s Causeway, Grand Central Hotel and Titanic Hotel which really helped me learn more about the industry. The lecturers helped us learn about Harvard referencing for coursework which will be vital for progressing on to university. This course has made me feel more prepared for the next step and I am excited to continue studying travel and tourism at university.”
