Pearson BTEC HNC in Applied Sciences student, Charmayne Gourley (42) from Bangor, is studying towards her dream of working in the healthcare sector.

Charmayne left school at 16 in the 1990s with no qualifications. In 2022, Charmayne, now a mother of four, decided to follow her dream of entering the healthcare sector and began studying on the Access Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies at SERC Bangor Campus. After completing the Access course, she enrolled in her current HNC in Applied Science Course.

On her experience of returning to College, Charmayne comments, “I had always wanted to return to education. I was diagnosed with ADHD in 2020 and because of this diagnosis, I decided to give education another try but adapt my way of learning, and SERC seemed perfect for that.”

On her course, Charmayne comments, “I really enjoy coming in and learning something new each day with the course modules covering a range of topics, including biochemistry, chemistry, cell biology, maths, microbiological techniques, human anatomy, physiology and the fundamentals of laboratory techniques. The course is exciting, fascinating and the tutors are incredibly supportive. I have also made many friends while on this course. It feels like one big, amazing community.”

On her time at SERC, she said, “When I first started at SERC, I had just received major life saving abdominal surgery. I arrived to my first day at SERC with my stomach stapled and was feeling very delicate, both mentally and physically. Due to the support of amazing tutors, I was able to overcome that and really focus on my studies. Although I now have different tutors this year, they too have been incredible and encouraging.”

On her next steps, Charmayne comments, “Next year I plan on going to university to study paramedical science. Becoming a paramedic appeals to me because I have a deep desire to help others in moments of need, and I feel drawn to the fast-paced, dynamic nature of healthcare, where quick thinking and compassion can make a real difference in people's lives. This career path aligns with my passion for service and my commitment to making a positive impact in the community.”

She concludes, “To anyone thinking about studying this course, I would say go for it! Don’t let age or neurodivergence stand in your way as you will be surprised at what you are capable of. The course takes dedication and commitment, along with self-discipline, but you will grow and develop if you apply yourself. Due to SERC, I feel I have been able to accomplish things I didn’t think were possible for me to do. As a bonus, I have set an example for my four children and currently have my 16 and 25-year-old sons studying at SERC on courses too. Overall, I rate my experience 10/10. “
