You may or may not know that it's National Children's Gardening week, and to mark the occasion, horticulture lecturer Claire Dunwoody has provided some tips and ideas on getting kids into gardening.
Grow Something Edible
It's not too late to sow peas or beans and they are really easy. Dig over a patch of soil, press the seeds into the ground about 5cm deep, and keep them watered. They will need something to climb up, it could be a fence, or some bamboo canes. Watch out for slugs, and they should be ready to eat by the end of the summer!
Plant a Bee and Butterfly Garden
If you have space, choose a few plants that pollinators will love. Butterflies like buddleia or verbena, and bees love lavender, and kids will love watching them visit the garden.
Upcycle Some Containers
Use any old container, maybe a tin can, a milk carton, or even an old welly! Make some drainage holes in the bottom, add some compost and just one or two bedding plants. Kids love making something out of nothing.
