Former SERC student Shannon McKnight has graduated her university course with a 2:1 in Early Childhood Studies and is one step closer to her dream job.

Shannon, a Lisburn local, attended SERC’s Lisburn campus and did the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development (CCLD), awarded by CACHE, one of the leading awarding bodies in the care and early years sector. On her time at SERC, Shannon reflects, “Having just finished my A Levels at school, I found SERC to have a very relaxed atmosphere. All the tutors were so friendly, and I mixed very quickly with the peers in my class. I also enjoyed getting into more placements and gaining more experience that I would be able to take with me and use as I go forward into my chosen career.”

“I feel that my SERC course has helped me gain more confidence. The tutors were so encouraging towards me and I knew I always had their full support. As well as this, this course gave me 3 A level equivalent grades (AAB- an overall A grade), which allowed me to go on to Stranmillis University to study Early Childhood Studies.”

“Now I am starting a Primary PGCE with specialism in mathematics in September at Edgehill University. This means that this time next year I will be qualified as a primary school teacher, which is my dream career! It may have taken me longer than the standard teaching route, but I wouldn’t change my path, as I have been given the gift of time and with that came maturity and experience! “

Louise Cinnamond, SERC Associate Lecturer in Early Years, comments, "I am delighted with the progress that Shannon has made, Shannon truly deserves this excellent result.  Shannon will be a fantastic teacher."

Shannon concludes, “Without the knowledge and placement experience gained from SERC I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
