Five students from SERC got a coveted ‘behind the scenes’ insight of the Amgen Irish Open at Royal County Down, Newcastle last week as part of a new Careers in Golf initiative.

Newry Mourne and Down Labour Market Partnership partnered with the Golf Forum - which comprises twelve golf organisations from across the UK and Ireland – to offer their Careers in Golf initiative to young people in the area during the major tournament.

Cahir Clancy, Careers Advisor at SERC’s Downpatrick Campus said, “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students - Estere Zarina and EJ Waston, both from the Level 2 Travel and Tourism; Odhran Gribbon-Milla and Ethan Edgar, both from the Level 2 Traineeship in Carpentry and Joinery; and Breandán Laverty, from Skills for Life and Work - to find out about the range of career opportunities available in the golf sector.   The students participated in a Careers in Golf workshop and enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the Amgen Irish Open."

He added, “Major tournaments, like the Amgen Irish Open, take years of planning and require people with a variety of skills-set to ensure they run smoothly.   The tournament is just one element of what the golf sector has to offer in terms of career opportunities."
