Local Crossgar man and former SERC student, Daniel Murdock, has bravely taken the plunge and decided to start his own business.
After leaving St Colmcille's High School at the age of 16, Daniel enrolled onto a Travel and Tourism course at SERC's Downpatrick Campus. On completion of his course Daniel then secured a job to get some industry experience. It was then he stumbled across the world of hospitality. Daniel realised that this was his passion and made the decision to return to education.
Having previously had a great experience within SERC, Daniel returned and enrolled onto the Ulster University Foundation degree in Tourism, Hospitality and Events programme.
Speaking about his experience Daniel said, “Studying at SERC helped prepare me for working within the hospitality industry in a number of ways. As part of my course I did a placement at a local hotel which gave me a practical insight into the industry. This course also prepared me for university level coursework and allowed me to progress on to the Ulster University International Hospitality Management degree via bridging progression. I would recommend this course to anyone hoping to start a career in hospitality.”
Daniel graduated from Ulster University in 2016 with a 2:1 in International Hospitality Management.
After he graduated, Daniel continued his career in the hospitality industry by managing a popular café in his hometown. It was then Daniel realised that he had the courage and entrepreneurial spirit to set up his own business thanks to the skills set and experience gained at SERC.
Daniel opened 11a Café in April this year in the heart of Crossgar. In only 6 months, Daniel has managed to create a thriving and successful business.
Daniel started as the sole worker in his café, juggling roles such as managing, cooking, creating menus, and pricing. His hard work and determination has paid off and he has taken on two more staff members and now offers outside catering due to the success and demand for his delicious cheesecakes, which he bakes himself.
