October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is a worldwide annual campaign to highlight the importance of breast awareness.

Each year, about 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. It is more common in women over 50, but it can also affect younger women. It is important that women and men check their breasts regularly for any changes and to let a GP examine any changes found. Breast cancer in men is rare.

Women aged between 50 –70 years old who are registered with a GP are invited every three years for a mammogram with the NHS Breast Screening Programme. This service is organised via your GP.

Women aged between 40- 49 years old or over 70 years old can book an appointment on the Action Cancer Big Bus, which is a mobile unit that travels around different venues. To find out more and to book an appointment, click here

MacMillan Cancer offers a range of information about breast cancer for both women and men. To access their short video explaining the different types of breast cancer, click here

Each year, about 375 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. For more information on breast cancer in men, click here
