Chloe Geddes from Bangor has found a change in the right direction after diverting to a new area of interest in Engineering at SERC, a pathway which has worked in her favour to discover her career ambitions as she progresses to Higher Education.

After finishing her A Levels at school, Chloe (21) decided College was the best route for her. She completed her Level 2 in Animal Care, but after a calling to explore a new passion in Engineering, she enrolled on the Level 3 National Diploma in Engineering – Advanced Manufacturing course. Chloe was recently awarded a final grade of D*D*D* and is now embarking on her HND in Engineering (Mechanical and Advanced Manufacturing.)

Chloe spoke fondly on the Engineering route, saying: “I really enjoyed my time on the Level 3 course and the blend of both theory and practical work-based elements. I especially loved being able to work in the workshop and show my creativity through many projects, which is something you don’t get to experience much in school. Although I was one of the only girls on my course, I felt encouraged by two of my female tutors, who inspired me with the knowledge that there is a strong presence of women in this industry.”

She added: “I have recently progressed to Higher Education and have started an HND in Engineering. I am really enjoying the course, and the teachers have shown me incredible support. Their previous experience in the engineering industry helps me to learn a lot of valuable knowledge to build my own skills.”

Continuing, Chloe spoke on her participation in the Cutting-Edge Programme; a SERC Engineering student enterprise company which produces bespoke giftware and jewellery at internal and external events.

She said: “Cutting Edge is a great student initiative to be involved in. We have made a wide range of different products like Christmas decorations, coasters, fridge magnets, signs, and we have also engraved glass. It’s great to put together your own ideas and showcase your work at college fairs on campus. I have also been given the opportunity to use a laser cutter, which I have gotten confident at using and setting up for different projects.”

Concluding, she said: “I would highly recommend anyone to consider a course in Engineering if they have an interest in it, or any subject they enjoy. The progression to Higher Education will undoubtedly guide me in the future, and the overall teaching environment at SERC has been great in helping me develop a broad range of skills. All the teachers always set aside time to help you with any issues, and make sure you understand what you are learning. I am excited to progress through my HND and explore a potential career route in Engineering.”
