Why read for pleasure? Reading expands your knowledge, improves your language skills, reduces stress, boosts your creativity and enhances your critical thinking. Through reading for pleasure, you improve yourself. At SERC’s LRCs, one of their aims for this year is to increase the number of staff and students who are reading for pleasure, and there are several ways you can get involved.
Libraries NI
The LRCs are pleased to announce that they are now working with Libraries NI to further their aim of promoting reading for pleasure. Staff and students can sign up for Libraries NI membership by visiting the LRC E-Resources page. Here you will also find links to the Libraries NI apps called ‘Libby’ and ‘Borrowbox’, which provide access to thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines and audio books.
Representatives of Libraries NI will visit Bangor Campus on Monday 3 March, and staff and students will be given an opportunity to take part in a Libraries NI survey which will help shape the Libraries NI offering in the future. You will find Libraries NI representatives outside the Bangor Campus College Kitchen from 10am – 3pm on the day.
There will also be an opportunity to attend a session in the Bangor LRC at 1pm on 3 March, on how to create a Libraries NI online membership and how to download and use the Libby and Borrowbox apps - the session will last approximately 30 minutes.
Fabulous Fiction Trust Library
The LRCs have introduced a ‘Fabulous Fiction Trust Library’, at all LRCs - where staff and students can leave a book they have finished reading and take a new one to read. Fabulous Fiction Trust Library book clubs have been established in the Bangor Campus LRC, and the other LRCs aim to establish more at other campuses soon – just pop into your local SERC LRC and ask about their book clubs.
