Electrical engineering student Troy McConville from SERC’s Newtownards Campus is celebrating after finishing third place with this athletics team at the Schools International Pentathlon.
Hosted at the Emirates arena in Glasgow, the competition saw competitors from across the British Isles compete to score points in 60m hurdles, shot putt, 200m, long jump and 800m events.
Troy fits in his study and working commitments around training five days a week and has been competing from a young age after being influenced by his father who also competes at senior level.
With 15 other competitors in his team, Troy faced some tough competition from team mates and rivals alike.
At the end of the events Troy was placed eighth overall scoring well across all events. The team achieved a combined score of 10229, narrowly missing out on silver by just 51 points.
Troy is ranked first place in Ireland in pole vault and pentathlon and now looks ahead to continuing his training as he hopes to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
SERC Deputy Head of School for the School of Construction, Engineering Services and Skills for Work Stuart Rankin said that “It is great to see students flourishing outside of the classroom and Troy is showing great drive and termination to succeed. I wish him all the best of luck in his training and future competitions.”
