Gardening Tips and Advice

SERC's team of horticulture experts bring you weekly gardening tips and advice. This week horticulture lecturer Joanna Loane has provided us with some helpful advice on sowing seeds in pots and containers.

Now that the weather is warming up, the soil will be getting warm enough to plant many of our garden seeds directly. This means sowing them into their final growing position, without the need to start them off indoors or in a greenhouse. Seeds that are labelled ‘hardy’ can be planted directly earlier in the season, when frost will not damage them. But now that the risk of frost has hopefully passed, and the soil is heating up, we can sow a larger variety of seeds outdoors, either into the ground, or into pots and other containers.
