Two hundred and seventy-three (273) students have successfully completed their Level 2 or Level 3 Apprenticeships at South Eastern Regional College this past year.

William Greer, Chief Training & Contracts Officer, SERC said, “The Apprenticeship route remains a popular route for many young people who are keen to learn practical skills, gain qualifications and have access to progression routes that will lead to a career in a specific industry or sector, all whilst earning whilst they learn - one of the biggest attractions of the apprenticeship route."

He added, “This latest cohort of apprentices completing Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships have successfully achieved their qualifications subject areas traditionally associated with apprenticeships such as joinery, plumbing, motor vehicle, catering, land-based engineering, plastering and hairdressing.  However, parents and potential students may be surprised to learn that SERC also offers Apprenticeships in childcare, financial services, health and social care, pharmacy, refrigeration and fire and security systems and this past year we have introduced new apprenticeships in fenestration (glazing) and polymers (plastics) to meet the needs of local industry.”

Megan Davidson (21) said, “I am currently employed with SIA NI Ltd and successfully progressed through the Level 2 and the Level 3 Security Systems Apprenticeship at SERC.   The opportunity to work, gain experience and get paid all at the same time certainly influenced my decision to follow the apprenticeship route."

She added, “I enjoyed the practical aspects of my training and the theory which supported my understanding.  Having the Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications and experience, means I can go out on my own jobs installing fire systems, CCTV, intruder alarms and access control systems.   I get the opportunity to work with clients all over the country and can discuss their needs and recommend necessary upgrades to their systems."

“I would recommend anyone interested in this apprenticeship to enrol in SERC for their studies.   Anyone who follows the Security Systems Apprenticeship programme at the College will receive excellent tuition, training, support and the encouragement to excel in all aspects of the course and within the industry."

She added, “I was encouraged to get involved in the National Fire & Security NI Competition, a two-person team event in which myself and my classmate, Aislinn came first, and the UK wide IFSEC in London where we came second.  My involvement in the competitions has been one of the highlights of my apprenticeship and doing so well was a real confidence booster."

She concluded, “The learning never stops with an Apprenticeship and there are plenty of opportunities for development for a career in this industry.”
