Level 3 extended diploma students from SERC collected their results on Thursday 16 August and celebrated another year of superb results with over 100 students achieving the equivalent of 3 A grades or higher at A level. Many students had an extra reason to celebrate by achieving the equivalent to 3A* grades.
Celebrating two years of hard work was manufacturing engineering student Dean Young. Dean said “I am over the moon I’ve got 3 Distinction stars. Thanks to SERC I have secured employment as a project engineer at Creative Composites and secured a place at university to study engineering management”
Dean is a former pupil of Friends School Lisburn. Dean enrolled to SERC after his GCSE’s. Classmate Jonathan Murray was also celebrating after receiving a tripe distinction star. Jonathan is now working as a mechatronics apprentice at Montupet (UK) Ltd.
David Conway from Lisburn achieved two distinction stars and a distinction in his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science. David is now planning to progress to university to study biomedical science. David is a former pupil of Wallace High School and enrolled to SERC after his GCSE’s because he said he ‘liked the idea of assignments rather than end of year exams.’ He said he has ‘already recommended SERC to others.’
David said “I am absolutely delighted with my grades. I have worked hard throughout the year and received fantastic support from my tutors. I chose to study at SERC after I completed an extra engineering GCSE there. I liked its state-of-the-art facilities and the tutors are very friendly.” Another student who exceeded her expectations was Chelsey Rowntree from Armagh. Chelsey achieved three distinction stars in her level 3 extended diploma in animal management and is now progressing to the University of Chester to study a BSc (Hons) in animal behaviour and welfare. Chelsey achieved distinctions in all her modules.
Jack Johnston was also celebrating having achieved a triple distinction star in his Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT course. Jack now plans to study the HND in software and network engineering course at SERC in September.
Business student Thomas Russell from Banbridge achieved two distinction stars and a distinction and is now progressing to study a BA (Hons) Business with Accounting BA (Hons) Business with Accounting BA (Hons) Business with Accounting BA (hons) in business with accounting at Northumbria University.
Max Melville also exceeded his expectations having achieved three distinction stars in his manufacturing engineering course. Max explains "Getting these results has been the highlight of my time at SERC. I've had a fantastic time at SERC and I'd really recommend it as a place to study."
Dr Michael Malone, SERC Director of Curriculum and Information Services had this to say: “This level of success is testament to the high level of teaching and learning that goes on within the College. All students are to be congratulated as they all worked extremely hard throughout the year and I am delighted that all their hard work has paid off. We wish them every success in their future studies and careers.”
He added “More students are opting for the Extended Diploma courses which are a three A-Level equivalent qualification that extends and deepens knowledge in specialist vocational areas such as business, construction, engineering, arts and sport to mention but a few. These qualifications prepare learners for employment in specific career sectors and act as an entry requirement for university or other higher education qualifications. Extended Diplomas give students the opportunity to study their chosen subject in greater depth, with more assessments being done through coursework, rather than exams, which can suit some students better.”
