South Eastern Regional College (SERC) is set to welcome three local schools at workshops for the annual Northern Ireland Science Festival. The workshops will run from 22 – 24 February across Bangor and Lisburn campuses. The festival is running from 16-26 February in many venues across Northern Ireland, and will showcase exciting workshops, exploring the wonders behind the dynamics of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Welcoming local primary school children to have a ‘blast off’ day, Key Stage 2 pupils will be taking part in the ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ workshops. Pupils will work in groups to design, build and test their own exciting rockets and thermal protection systems, all while exploring aerodynamics and thermal conductivity.

The fun doesn’t stop there – with a ‘Making Soap’ workshop lined up for those aged 13-14.  Pupils will put the chemistry of soap making into practice, working in groups to prepare a loaf of soap by using natural oils, ingredients, and the cold process to make a sweet-smelling success.

Karen Orme, Deputy Head of School, Applied Science, SERC comments:

“We are delighted to welcome the NI Science Festival back to SERC for another year, which has become a key event in our science calendar. Science is an integral part of everyday life, and we look forward to welcoming school children to get involved in the ‘Infinity and Beyond’ and ‘Making Soap’ workshops. This is a great chance for pupils to ask questions, explore the different elements of science, and show them the fantastic facilities that SERC has to offer.”
