The funding comes on the back of the College’s successful We Can Engineer It project which developed an online engagement tool to gather views from women and girls about engineering and barriers to the profession.
Aine McGreegan, Engineering Curriculum Manager at SERC said, “We are thrilled to have this funding which will seek to address our engagement work findings, essentially that there is a lack of encouragement from schools and parents, and a lack of female role models in the engineering workplace.”
She added, “We are in the process of planning a Women in Engineering Leadership course to help create strong positive female role models for the industry in our region, and a series of family workshops - in Bangor, Lisburn and Downpatrick this autumn - to raise awareness of engineering as a career route for primary school age girls. In addition, we will provide their parents with ideas on how to support their daughters in developing their enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects.”
