SERC intends to develop a store of Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme kits, to ensure that everybody has access to the scheme. Working with the Diamond Fund, SERC has secured funding to purchase 20 rucksacks to start this store of kit.
SERC has been supporting young adults to achieve through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards programme since 2018. The young people complete the programme with raised self-esteem and increased confidence.
As well as gaining a nationally recognised award, achievement of the Duke of Edinburgh evidences commitment and dedication whilst developing problem solving, independent thinking and leadership attributes; skills that the students can use in other areas of life.
It is recognised as the world’s leading youth award and can enhance employment and independence – which is something that SERC actively promotes.
Michelle Hickland, Deputy Head of School, School of Construction, Engineering Services and Skills for Work, SERC, commented, “The funding we have received is going to make a great difference to the Duke of Edinburgh participants, who would not be able to take part in the expedition if we could not lend them the equipment.
Despite the present circumstances, we hope that if we are back to work any time before the end of August, we still plan to put the equipment to good use by getting Expeditions completed.
It is one of the most amazing experiences for the students, seeing them complete their awards despite all the barriers they face makes all the work more than worthwhile.”
