SERC Level 3 Extended Diploma Public Services students are undertaking 1000 miles of running, walking and cycling, tracked through their private Strava group, as a fundraising activity for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
RNLI provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland; they look after people on beaches and those affected by flooding. They have saved more than 142,700 lives since 1824. They also influence and educate people while working internationally to tackle drowning in communities globally.
The first-year class of 13 students started the 1000 miles last week and aim to complete the target within one month. To help them with this, the students are participating in the hands-on, project-based learning Leadership and Teamwork unit of their Public Services course. This will allow the students to meet assessed criteria by completing a team activity with one student assigned as a leader. This fundraising activity also allows them to accrue hours towards their Volunteering course unit; they are also working towards their Millennium Volunteers and Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Included in their schedule was the “RNLI Mayday Mile” where students participated in a nationwide charity event for RNLI on the May bank holiday, walking a mile together in fancy dress.
