SERC’s Robert Sets Sights on States

A South Eastern Regional College (SERC) computing student, Robert Donnan (19), has set his sights on the United States, following a successful application for the Study USA programme.

Robert, from Newtownards, came to SERC following his GCSEs at St Columbanus College, Bangor. He successfully completed a BTEC Level 3 in IT before progressing onto the Foundation Degree in Computing and he is now getting ready to attend a US college for one year to further his studies. Robert spoke about the opportunity and how it came about. “I was aware of the Study USA programme but had been too young to apply before now.  When I received information from Zia Nazar, at SERC’s International team, I was keen to read up a bit more about it and am delighted to have secured a place .  I have always been interested in travel and am looking forward to the experience of living and studying in a new environment, meeting new people and getting involved in different studies and cultural activities for the year.”

Speaking about the college where he will be studying, Robert said, “I accepted a place for DeSales University in Pennsylvania and will be based in the Center Valley Campus. I will be studying a class in Business Management and a STEM related subject, possible technology or computer science, and will have the opportunity to take up some minor subjects so I hope to take up something like animation, web development, film, a foreign language and possibly something completely new such as Gender Studies."

He added, “A big part of the experience will be living on campus where I will get to sample the American university culture.  I will be staying in a dorm room with an American roommate.

“I will be spending one academic year in the States starting from mid-August this year.   It promises to be a fantastic experience and I would like to add some travel on to the end of my studies if things all work out before coming back to Northern Ireland.”
