SERC Level 3 and Level 5 Performing Arts Dance students perform for camera as part of their ‘Dance for Camera’ course unit, encouraging the students to show off their moves and creativity in making a promotional video.

The ‘Dance for Camera’ unit is designed to enable students to explore how dance is choreographed for screen and to explore the different platforms which engage with dance on camera. The students analyse different films, commercials, television programmes and pop promos, gaining an understanding of how they are created. The technical requirements of filmmaking are also covered, through the creation of their own dance film. This enhances their digital literacy and choreography skills; vital requirements for an ever-evolving industry which is seeing an increase in digital and hybrid performance.

Matthew Watson, SERC Lecturer in Performing Arts, comments, “For this unit, the students were presented with a time-bound brief to create a promotional video and had to conceptualise, create and develop their own dance video to encourage prospective students to study Dance in Higher and Further Education.

“They created a storyboard to help them visually realise the final product, agreeing on the video, shot-by-shot, as a team, considering all aspects of the video presentation including style of dance, clothing choices, camera angles, lighting states, song choices and setting, before beginning the process of creating their own choreography.

“After the filming process they had to move on to edit the footage, following the original storyboard and plan they had in place. Maintaining full involvement, they collaborated with the editor to ensure their artistry was clear, whilst also taking into consideration any changes that needed to be made during the editing process.”
