Voluntary, community and statutory organisations were invited into South Eastern Regional College’s Bangor, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses, to hear about the new community developments for 2020 including adult returner courses, careers outreach and PathFinder, the College’s community hubs. The sessions were attended by representatives from PSNI, Atlas Centre and South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust.

Attendees were able to find out about SERC’s Restart Education course and the positive impact that it has on participants. Restart Education is a free, part-time course for adults and requires no previous qualifications, studying 9 hours per week. The focus of the course is on improving English and Maths skills, as well as introducing science alongside personal skills building, exploring career options and career planning.

The College's Careers Outreach Service is working with groups in the local community to reach people who have been out of education for some time.

Elaine Bradley, Deputy Head of School Adult Education at SERC said, “We were delighted to share information about Restart Education, our Careers Outreach and SERC’s PathFinder. It’s an exciting new development for adults who are considering returning to education, whereby they can call into their local campus for an informal chat over a cuppa with a SERC staff member. They can access help to explore courses available at SERC, get bespoke careers advice and guidance, have a look around the campus, as well as help with completing applications.

She added, “PathFinder does not require an appointment; it is open to the public and runs once a month in Bangor, Downpatrick and Lisburn Campuses:

  • SERC Downpatrick (9:30am – 11.30am) - Monday 9th March, Monday 20th April, Monday 11th May, Monday 15th June.
  • SERC Bangor (9.30am-11.30am) - Tuesday 10th March, Tuesday 21st April, Tuesday 12th May, Tuesday 16th June.
  • SERC Lisburn (9.15am-11.00am) - Friday 13th March 2020, Friday 24th April, Friday 15th May, Friday 19th June.
