Refreshers January 2022

SERC's Students’ Union are hosting Refreshers events across the College’s four main campuses from Monday 24 to Thursday 27 January, to remind students of the services and support available throughout the college and the local community for their health and well-being.

The week will feature on-campus fairs at:

  • Downpatrick - Downpatrick Sports Hall - Monday 24 January 10am-12pm
  • Bangor - Bangor Sports Hall - Tuesday 25 January 10am-12pm
  • Lisburn - Lisburn Sports Hall - Wednesday 26 January 10am-12pm

Classes can book a timeslot to attend the fair. SERC Academic staff should  look out for booking information in their SERC email at the beginning of January.

The SU will have a separate Refreshers event in Newtownards on Thursday 27 January featuring guest speakers from Inspire, Link Centre, and North Down and Ards Community Association. Booking for the Ards event can be made through the Student Engagement Team.

In addition to the on-campus events, there will also is an online exhibition, which you can access by clicking here.

Speaking about Refreshers Catherine Shipman, Student Engagement Manager at SERC, says “The beginning of term and the start of a new year presents us with a great opportunity to remind our students of all the services available to them within the college and the local community. Our Refreshers Week looks to highlight these services that can have a great positive impact on their health and wellbeing, both physically and mentally.

“We aim to ensure that the students know about student finance and local banking options so they are financially fit, community groups and volunteering opportunities to help them stay connected to the community, and all the support services on hand to help them cope with a range of issues as part of everyday life.”

Catherine continued “We are delighted that so many organisations from the local community are supporting the week including Praxis Care, Caremark, Cancer Focus, the Link Centre, Deafblind, SOS Bus, Guide Dogs, YMCA, Royal Air Force, Education Authority, Barnardos, Beeches Residential Home and SERC’s Student Carers. In addition to this the college’s Student Finance and Careers teams will be available for drop-in sessions to help give advice to any student who may need it.”

She added “For anyone interested in getting involved in something new, our SU team will be on hand to take sign ups and to talk to you about the various different clubs and societies you can join here at SERC such as the netball club, access club and the pride alliance."

Catherine concluded “SERC’s Students’ Union plays a significant part in student life here at the College. We encourage students to get involved and avail of the activities and opportunities on offer which complement not only their studies, but also their wellbeing whilst they are here and often when they progress to employment or further studies.”
