Platinum Pudding Judges

There was a definite buzz around our Bangor Campus this week as all manner of delicious cakes and desserts were dropped off for judging for Ards and North Down Borough Council’s Platinum Pudding Competition.

The judges included Wendy Smith, Events Manager, Gareth Thompson, President Bangor Chamber of Commerce, and SERC’s own Hospitality and Catering Lecturer and Chef extraordinaire, Brian Magill.

Brian said, “We were delighted with the range of desserts and bakes entered for the competition.   Tasting and judging the puddings was a challenge as they were all so different, from jellies to cakes, biscuits to flans, tarts to meringues, there was certainly something for everyone and you could see their creators had pulled out all the stops to strive for the perfect pudding.”

Winners have been announced on the Council’s Facebook page today and we are happy to share the results:
1st place - Jenny Watson: Midsummer Honey Bundt with Custard Glaze
2nd place - Nicola Howard: Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
3rd place - Jacqueline Macartney: Crown Cheesecake Trio

The lucky winners will be invited to The Big Jubilee Lunch taking place this Sunday at Sea Bangor Festival, when they will be presented with their prizes by star host, Jean-Christophe Novelli MBE.

You can get a taste of the winning pudding if you pop down to Sea Bangor this Saturday, when students from SERC’s hospitality and catering courses will be working with world renowned, Jean Christophe Novelli MBE, helping prepare food for demonstrations.   The students will also be working with Jean Christophe to prepare and cook the Big Lunch on Sunday (most definitely something to add to your CV!).   And if you’re still hungry, make a point of coming along to the SERC Chip Shop Pop-Up for that ultimate taste of the seaside.

Watch out for SERC Travel & Tourism students who will be Ambassadors working on the ground to help and assist visitors throughout the festival.
