UK Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 takes place from 13 - 19 May, and this year’s theme is ‘Movement’, because engaging in physical activity is not only good for your body, but also great for your mind.

The benefits of exercising for mental health include:

  • Boosting self-esteem and confidence
  • Increasing motivation and focus.
  • Reducing tension, anxiety, stress and mental fatigue.
  • Reducing loneliness by offering new ways to get together with others.
  • Calming your mind and distracting you from negative thought patterns.
  • Helping with difficult emotions such as anger, frustration, and sadness.

In the UK and Ireland, the guidance is that adults should aim to be active every day and do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity every week. Prolonged periods of sitting are said to lead to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer.
