Holly Gallagher

Holly Gallagher (19), from Lurgan, has been writing song lyrics for as long as she can remember, so it’s not surprising that she decided to follow a music route at SERC.

Holly, a student on the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Music at SERC’s Lisburn Campus, said, “I am quite creative and besides music, I am into art and did also consider that route for further study, but my passion for music always came tops. I sing, play piano and have been writing all my life. I wrote my first song, Oatmeal Cat, when I was about 4 years old!  Over the years, I have filled loads of books with poems and lyrics, some of which have been developed into songs."

“Before coming to SERC, I did a lot of research on different courses and visited a few Further Education College Open Days.  I really liked the atmosphere when I came to SERC, I met the tutors, and I heard more about the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music.   I was also familiar with Lisburn, and always loved the place, so it felt right for me to come here.

Speaking about the course, Holly said, “The course has a good structure, but you also have the chance to explore and develop your skills and your music.   Everyone on the course is great and there is such a creative mix of talent in the class. It’s easy to talk to people when they share your passion for music.   I would recommend it if you’re into music.

“One of the best things about the course has been the opportunity to get involved in the new monthly music club, which has been set up by the music team and Island Arts Centre.  My classmate Sydney McCarter and I perform as Vesperteen, and we were delighted to showcase our band at the inaugural music club session in January.   We are looking forward to getting involved again – it is a great opportunity to perform live and to meet other musicians and help develop the music scene in the Lisburn area."

“I would like to progress to HND or degree level and have looked at some of the progression routes open to me - I am keeping my options open.”
