A counselling course offered by South Eastern Regional College is the first in Northern Ireland to receive professional accreditation by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).

SERC’s Foundation Degree in Counselling, accredited by Ulster University, which the College has offered since 2000, is also the first collaborative programme to have achieved the recognition.

Andrea Woodrow, Associate Lecturer in Counselling at SERC said, “This is fantastic recognition for the course and essentially, it means that students who achieve the qualification will not have to sit the BACP certificate of proficiency test as part of their professional accreditation process.

She added, “Counselling has become a popular career pathway and professional qualifications are in demand by employers. This will be a highly sought-after qualification for people working in the caring sector. Students following this pathway go on to work in voluntary counselling organisations or use it to support their current occupations. Additionally they may eventually set up their own private practice once they have accrued further experience.”

Applications are now open for the UU Foundation Degree in Counselling commencing September 2021.
