SERC Lisburn Level 3 Apprenticeship NI in Construction Plant Maintenance students went head-to-head in a competition testing their knowledge and skills at the college’s Lisburn Campus.

The competition involved students completing practical tasks, which included measuring part of an engine crankshaft, carrying out an inspection on a mini digger, positioning an engine and adjusting valve clearances, threading, setting up a MIG welder correctly, and completing a butt and an overlap welded joint.

The students were judged by SERC Motor Vehicle Lecturers Sam Simpson, Stefan Jones, Simon Toman, James Nyamtenha and John McCulla. The students were marked on using PPE correctly, following procedures correctly, handling tools and equipment with appropriate care and making sure the workshop area was clean, tidy and safe.

First place went to Michael Scullion (19), from Lisburn, who won a £100 Halfords tool voucher, second place went to William Eldon (23), from Portadown, who won a £75 Halfords tool voucher, and third place went to Cory McMullan (21), from Bellaghy, who won a £50 Halfords tool voucher.
