Former SERC student Colm Gallagher, NOCN Level 2 Award in Developing Skills for the Creative & Cultural Industry, Newcastle Campus, has found success in both photography and hospitality industries after completing his course.

Colm Gallagher, who completed his course and entered the world of work in 2015, has made a name for himself and his skills as a photographer while also working in the hospitality industry.

As Colm comments, “I currently work in hospitality but photography wise I've sold a lot of prints and framed prints. I’ve done a few holy communions and have recently got booked for a few weddings through word of mouth as I don't really advertise for them, but I think I might start. I've also done photos for the likes of Daisy Lodge, taking photos at their Santa's grotto and at charity dinners. It will all help to get your name out there. One of my highlights was when Mourne Stimulus Day Centre contacted me to say that one of my photos was picked to turn into a wall mural in their new spa treatment room. It was great to be picked & to see one of my photos on such a large scale”

On advice for aspiring photographers, Colm says, “When I finished my course, my lecturer said to me ‘don't you give up, you have a good eye for this’ which was touching. I think that is what kept me going as well as the comments I get on my photos, whether I'm in work, up the street or on social media. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and photograph different subjects whether it's wildlife, nature, landscape, portrait, macro, or anything else. It's fun to try it all. Life is a journey not a sprint, so always look to the future but persevere with the present. Good things will happen when the time is right for you.”

Colm also had his photography featured recently in the Down Recorder and is on the lookout for people wanting to hire a photographer. For more information, make sure to check out Colm's Photography Facebook Page
