Access Course Sets Jason on Road to University

Jason had been working in Australia for two and a half years, before coming back to Northern Ireland and realising that he wanted to prioritise his education and study at university. Jason decided to study the Access Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies at SERC after a friend recommended the course to him, and after discovering he could easily travel to his local SERC campus in the Downpatrick area.  

On his course, Jason comments, “I would rate my experience a 10/10, it was amazing. School and learning were never good experiences for me in the past, but SERC’s more relaxed atmosphere and friendly lecturers made for an amazing experience. My favourite part of the course was getting over the fear of studying maths. Maths used to be difficult for me, but at SERC the topic was explained so well and in such an entertaining and informative way too– I’m so much more confident in the area now. The other modules were just as informative, like Psychology, English, Computing, Chemistry, and much more.

“The support at SERC was second to none, I’ve never had support like it at any place of education I’ve studied at before. The support I received whilst studying was fantastic- the tutors were available to reply to messages and emails quickly, there was an abundance of learning material supplied to students, and there were lots of online tools like Microsoft Teams at our disposal.

Jason concludes, “To anyone thinking of studying at SERC, I would say go for it. There is no time like the present to get involved and learn something new, it’s a joyful journey. It’s not even like going back to school. School felt like a chore for me, and SERC did not feel like a chore - in every class I was learning something new, able to ask questions judgement-free, and meaningfully engage with the course topics, all while making friends along the way. SERC made studying such a breeze. After my current Computing Science degree, I now want to push myself to get a master's degree, a PHD, and a Doctorate. SERC helped me catch the buzz for learning, and it’s great as I have realised that education opens doors, and it can do the same for you.”
