Engineering apprentices from South Eastern Regional College (SERC), Belfast Met, Southern Regional College (SRC) and South West College (SWC) competed in an inter-college competition, which took place at SERC’s Nutts Corner Professional Skills Centre in March.
A total of thirty-seven students across the four colleges went head-to-head to demonstrate their skills across Fabrication, Welding, Turning and Milling categories. The final results were then judged by a panel of engineering lecturers across the competing colleges.
Two SERC apprentices were successful in securing places in the top ten, with Level 2 Engineering apprentice Niall Lavery (Nutts Corner Professional Skills Centre) finishing in first place, and Level 3 Engineering apprentice Adam Jackson (Bangor campus) taking the eighth place.
Ivan Kelly, SERC Engineering lecturer, commented,
“I would like to thank all the staff and students from the four colleges who took part in the inter-college competition. We had a great day, and all the students behaved perfectly, making a great professional impression of their colleges. We were really pleased with the turnout across the colleges, with a record 18 students attending from Belfast Met. It was great that four out of the six colleges in Northern Ireland competed, showing that the contest should be continued in the future.
“The quality of work was excellent from all colleges, and really demonstrated the great quality of teaching delivered across the sector. I want to thank all the staff who supported the event, and especially the technicians who worked hard to keep the students supplied with material, tools and equipment. Congratulations to all the winners who secured prizes on the day and demonstrated fantastic skills.
“There was a great selection of prizes handed out after the competition, which included six toolboxes, two helmets and an MMA welder which was given out as the top prize. Some of the prizes were donated by Modern Machinery Supplies in Lisburn, who I would also like to thank for supporting the competition.”
