When anyone starts a course at SERC, the ultimate goal will be to prepare for employment or further study - with SERC or another college or university. Besides all the help and support students can access from the Careers Team at SERC, course tutors will often organise visits from employers, past students and leaders from the sector related to your course throughout the year - all part of learning about different pathways and where your course can take you.
Level 3 Business students at SERC Bangor Campus enjoyed one such visit when Matthew McArthur and Rebecca Kinder from Hays Recruitment, were invited along to their class.
Business Studies Lecturer, Gillian Auld said, “Hays Recruitment is just one of the many recruitment agencies students might register with to find employment when nearing completion of their studies.
She added, “We were delighted to have Hays representatives talk to the students about what recruitment agencies are looking for when they try to match people with employers.
“The session was valuable as it highlighted the emphasis recruiters and employers now place on soft skills such as teamwork, interpersonal communication, critical thinking and problem-solving. These are all skills needed to succeed in the workplace alongside the knowledge you gain from your qualifications.”
Gillian concluded, “The team did emphasis – the very ethos of further education - that life-long learning is vital. They encouraged all students to adopt a learning mindset which is essential for career progression.”
Hays also provided links to additional short training courses that the students could access.
