Level 2 Traineeship in Maintenance Operations (Construction)
This Traineeship programme combines practical, hands-on experience with theoretical knowledge, equipping you with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in various construction building repairs.

This traineeship is aimed at 16 year olds who have just left school having obtained their GCSE's.
This programme is ideal if you would like to start your career in the various construction trades in repairing buildings.
Throughout the programme you will learn about small-scale repairs in various trades in the construction sector such as:
- Building Brickwork
- Painting and Decorating
- Plastering
- Plumbing
- Carpentry repairs
- Health and Safety in the workplace
Project Based Learning will also be a key feature, where you will explore real-world problems and challenges that have been developed with employers.
Developing your wider skills as well as providing you with the technical skills and knowledge in your chosen area, the traineeship will help you to develop a range of transversal skills that are important for employment including:
- Citizenship
- Working with others
- Problem solving and decision making
- Self-management
- Work professionalism
- Digital literacy
The new Traineeship programme will allow participants to achieve a full Level 2 qualification and will comprise the following key elements within the Direct Entry Traineeship or Introductory Traineeship:
Course will be a face to face 22-hour week and consist of:
- A professional & technical qualification equivalent to a minimum of 3 GCSEs grade C;
- A Transversal Skills qualification;
- L2 Essential Skills in numeracy and literacy or GCSE Grades A*-C in English and Maths;
- Work Based Learning;
- A 2-week induction;
- Professional & Technical skills development;
- An end-point assessment.
- You may also gain the opportunity to go on a vocational placement
Additional qualifications deemed necessary for work within a sector e.g. Health and Safety, CSR, manual handling. The traineeship is delivered through a blend of practical training and classroom-based learning. The course includes assessments, practical tasks and exams to ensure competency in various construction building repairs.
Direct Entry Traineeship: entry will be based upon gaining a minimum of Grade E in English and Grade D in Maths and completing a initial vocational assessment. (Enhanced criteria may apply*)
Introductory Traineeship: If you do not meet the enhanced entry criteria you may enter an ‘introductory phase’ of the Traineeship. Upon enrolment, you will carry out initial assessments to confirm if you should enter the full traineeship or the introductory phase.
You will need:
- 4 GCSEs grade D-G, including grade 'D' in maths and grade E' in English or equivalent
- Applicants that have not obtained the above grades but can demonstrate an equivalent level of experiential learning may also undertake a NI Traineeship through Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
Suitability will also be determined following an assessment of your current level of literacy and numeracy
If you have not obtained the stated entry grades for maths & English, but your assessment determines that you have the potential to achieve a Level 2 Essential Skill in numeracy and/or literacy over the duration of the NI Traineeship, you may be enrolled as an ‘Introductory’ Trainee, following the same programme as those of the Full NI Traineeship except for Essential Skills.

- Carry Out small-scale building repairs
- Carry out small-scale painting and decorating repairs
- Carry out small-scale Plastering repairs
- Carry out small-scale plumbing repairs
- Carry out carpentry repairs
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
