Level 2 Traineeship in Hairdressing
Level 2 Traineeships are ideal for learners who wish to develop and practice the skills required for employment within the hairdressing industry.
Available Sessions
We have 3 sessions available for application on this course in Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn.
This course is designed for those who have a passion for hairdressing and want to learn the skills required to create current looks within the industry.
The course has a hands-on approach, where students will gain experience in the college hairdressing salons of Shadeka and Revive. During your time at the college you will learn all aspects of hairdressing from styling to colouring and cutting, and the skills to communicate and work safely in the salon.
Developing your wider skills as well as providing you with the technical skills and knowledge in your chosen area, the traineeship will help you to develop a range of transversal skills that are important for employment including:
- Citizenship
- Working with others
- Problem solving and decision making
- Self-management
- Work professionalism
- Digital literacy
A key feature of delivery of Traineeships is the embedding of Project Based Learning into the curriculum which is a dynamic approach to learning, in which you will explore real-world problems and challenges that have been developed with employers. This prepares you for further study and/or employment as a trainee hairstylist within a salon.
The new Traineeship programme will allow participants to achieve a full Level 2 qualification. Delivered on campus 20 hours per week, the course will comprise the following key elements within the Direct Entry Traineeship or Introductory Traineeship.
- A level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
- Vocational skills development including Transversal and Digital skills
- Literacy and Numeracy qualification at Level 2 (may include GCSE qualifications in English and Maths)
- A vocational placement in college commercial salon
Students are required to purchase a uniform, kit to include 2 practice heads; staff will give details of both at interview sessions.
Direct Entry Traineeship: You must hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, defined as four GCSEs Grades D-G to include Maths and English Grade D or above. You will also be required to complete an initial vocational assessment.
*Introductory Traineeship: If you do not meet the enhanced entry criteria for 'Direct entry' you may enter an ‘introductory phase’ of the Traineeship.
Suitability will also be determined following an assessment of your current level of literacy and numeracy. If you have not obtained the stated entry grades for Maths & English, but your assessment determines that you have the potential to achieve a Level 2 Essential Skill in numeracy and/or literacy over the duration of the NI Traineeship, you may be enrolled as an ‘Introductory’ Trainee*, following the same programme as those of the Full NI Traineeship except for Essential Skills.
NB. Entry criteria may be subject to change and enhanced criteria may apply.
