Why Study This Course

This course is designed to develop your skills and knowledge in both hairdressing and media make-up to give you the opportunity to follow a career as a hairdresser or a makeup artist in fashion or media.

The course has a hands-on approach giving you the opportunity to gain experience in the College Salons of Shadeka and Revive. You will also work at commercial events such as Halloween events, intercampus competitions and Christmas shows, enabling you to gain industry relevant experience and build your portfolio.

During your time on the course you will learn the art of dressing hair, how to apply make-up, lash and brow treatment, how to cut and colour hair. You will also create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty industry. As well as providing you with the technical skills and knowledge in your chosen area, the Traineeship will help you to develop a range of transversal skills that are important for employment including: Problem solving, Teamwork, Communication, Time management, Entrepreneurship.

A key feature of delivery of Traineeships is the embedding of Project Based Learning into the curriculum which is a dynamic approach to learning, in which you will explore real-world problems and challenges that have been developed with employers. This prepares you for further study and/or employment as a trainee hairstylist/make-up artist.

Course Overview

The new Traineeship programme will allow participants to achieve a full Level 2 qualification. Delivered on campus 20 hours per week, the course will comprise the following key elements within the Direct Entry Traineeship or Introductory Traineeship.

  • A level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
  • Vocational skills development including Transversal and Digital skills
  • Literacy and Numeracy qualification at Level 2 (may include GCSE qualifications in English and Maths)
  • A college based placement

Students are required to purchase a uniform, hairdressing kit that includes dolls head and makeup, face-painting, and lash & brow kit.

 


Direct Entry Traineeship: You must hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, defined as four GCSEs Grades D-G to include Maths and English Grade D or above. You will also be required to complete an initial vocational assessment.

*Introductory Traineeship: If you do not meet the enhanced entry criteria for 'Direct entry' you may enter an ‘introductory phase’ of the Traineeship.

Suitability will also be determined following an assessment of your current level of literacy and numeracy. If you have not obtained the stated entry grades for Maths & English, but your assessment determines that you have the potential to achieve a Level 2 Essential Skill in numeracy and/or literacy over the duration of the NI Traineeship, you may be enrolled as an ‘Introductory’ Trainee*, following the same programme as those of the Full NI Traineeship except for Essential Skills.  

NB. Entry criteria may be subject to change and enhanced criteria may apply.

All applicants will be in for interview and skills test for this course.

  • Client care and communication in beauty related industies
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Lash and brow treatments
  • Cut hair using hairdressing techniques
  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
  • Themed face painting
  • Colour hair

Assessments will be carried out on paying clients

Successful completion of this course can lead to employment or further study on the Level 3 Hairdressing programme or Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up.
