Why Study This Course

This traineeship is ideal for someone who has recently left school and obtained their GCSEs, and wanting to learn and develop skills to pursue a career in children's care learning and development.

You will study a variety of topics such as child development and play, which will equip you to work in an early year's setting.  Learners will spend 2 days a week on placement in day care or nursery schools.

The programme blends theoretical knowledge with practical application, providing hands-on experience through workshops and real-world projects.

Project Based Learning will also be a key feature, where you will explore real-world problems and challenges that have been developed with employers.

Developing your wider skills as well as providing you with the technical skills and knowledge in your chosen area, the traineeship will help you to develop a range of transversal skills that are important for employment including:

  • Citizenship;
  • Working with others;
  • Problem solving and decision making;
  • Self-management;
  • Work professionalism;
  • Digital literacy
Course Overview

This qualification is suitable for learners who wish to work or are working in a supervised role in children’s care, learning and development in Northern Ireland.

The Traineeship programme will allow participants to achieve a full Level 2 qualification and will comprise the following key elements within the Direct Entry Traineeship or Introductory Traineeship:

The course will be delivered on campus 22 hours per week and will consist of:

  • A professional & technical qualification equivalent to a minimum of 3 GCSEs grade C;
  • A Transversal Skills qualification;
  • Level 2 Essential Skills in numeracy and literacy or GCSE Grades A*-C in English and Maths;
  • Work Based Learning;
  • A 2-week induction;
  • Professional & Technical skills development;
  • An end-point assessment;
  • A vocational placement (2 days per week) organised by the College;

To be eligible for this course, students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade D-G or above (for the Diploma).  Students must hold at least a D grade in both Maths and English for the Diploma.

For the Certificate:

  • 4 GCSEs, including either Maths or English at D grade or above.

Applicants who have not obtained the required grades may be eligible to enrol as an Introductory Trainee. Please contact us for further information if this applies to you.

Additionally, students must:

  • Provide evidence of securing a suitable placement that meets the course’s entry requirements before starting the programme.
  • Successfully pass the interview process as part of the admissions procedure

These requirements ensure that students are adequately prepared for the course and have the necessary foundation for success.

To be awarded this qualification, learners are required to successfully achieve all 8 mandatory units.

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to the Level 3 Diploma for Children’s Care Learning and Development (Wales and Northern Ireland).
