Why Study This Course

This course is aimed at 16 year olds who have just left school having obtained their GCSE's.

Bricklayers build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. They may also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.

You will learn about building methods and about construction technology, how to interpret drawings, how to construct solid walling and cavity walling, as well as health and safety.

Project based learning will also be a key feature, where you will explore real-world problems and challenges that have been developed with employers.  With this type of active and engaged learning, you will be inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects you are studying and develop a wide range of hands-on skills.

  • Citizenship
  • Working with others
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Self-management
  • Work professionalism
  • Digital literacy

Course Overview

Additional qualifications deemed necessary for work within a sector e.g. Health and Safety, CSR, manual handling.

The traineeship is delivered through a blend of practical training and classroom-based learning. The course includes assessments, practical tasks and exams to ensure competency in Bricklaying.

Direct Entry Traineeship: entry will be based upon gaining a minimum of Grade E in English and Grade D in Maths and completing a initial vocational assessment. (Enhanced criteria may apply*)

Introductory Traineeship: If you do not meet the enhanced entry criteria you may enter an ‘introductory phase’ of the Traineeship. Upon enrolment, you will carry out initial assessments to confirm if you should enter the full traineeship or the introductory phase.

You will need:

  • to hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, defined as four GCSEs at grades D to G including Grade D in Maths and Grade E in English, or equivalent.
  • Applicants who have not obtained the above grades, but can demonstrate an equivalent level of experiential learning may also undertake a NI Traineeship through Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
  • Suitability will also be determined following an assessment of your current level of literacy and numeracy.

If you have not obtained the stated entry grades for maths & English, but your assessment determines that you have the potential to achieve a Level 2 Essential Skill in numeracy and/or literacy over the duration of the NI Traineeship, you may be enrolled as an ‘Introductory’ Trainee, following the same programme as those of the Full NI Traineeship except for Essential Skills.
