You want to learn and develop the skills required for employment in the Barbering industry.
The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to cut men's hair and facial hair to shape using basic techniques, dry and finish men's hair and shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp. You will also advise and consult with clients and develop and maintain your effectiveness at work.
The course will develop your wider skills, as well as providing you with the technical skills and knowledge in your chosen area. The Traineeship will help you to develop a range of transversal skills that are important for employment including:
- Problem solving
- Teamwork
- Communication
- Time management
- Entrepreneurship
A key feature of delivery of Traineeships is the embedding of Project Based Learning into the curriculum which is a dynamic approach to learning, in which you will explore real-world problems and challenges that have been developed with employers.
The Traineeship programme will allow participants to achieve a full Level 2 qualification. It is delivered on campus 23 hours per week and will comprise the following key elements within the Direct Entry Traineeship or Introductory Traineeship:
- A professional & technical qualification equivalent to a minimum of 3 GCSEs grade C
A Transversal Skills qualification
Level 2 Essential Skills in numeracy and literacy or GCSE Grades A*-C in English and Maths
Work Based Learning
A 2-week induction
Professional & Technical skills development
A vocational placement (curriculum to confirm duration) organised by the College
Direct Entry Traineeship: You must hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, defined as four GCSEs Grades D-G to include Maths and English Grade D or above. You will also be required to complete an initial vocational assessment.
Some areas have enhanced criteria for English and Maths at GCSE.
Suitability will also be determined following an assessment of your current level of literacy and numeracy. If you have not obtained the stated entry grades for Maths & English, but your assessment determines that you have the potential to achieve a Level 2 Essential Skill in numeracy and/or literacy over the duration of the NI Traineeship, you may be enrolled as an ‘Introductory’ Trainee*, following the same programme as those of the Full NI Traineeship except for Essential Skills.
*Introductory Traineeship: If you do not meet the enhanced entry criteria you may enter an ‘introductory phase’ of the Traineeship. Upon enrolment, you will carry out initial assessments to confirm if you should enter the full traineeship or the introductory phase.
