Funded through the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, SERC was the only FE College in Northern Ireland to complete what are known as student mobilities (ie study visits) in 2021/2022.
The Travel and Tourism students stayed in Tenerife for two weeks at the FU International Academy Tenerife, as part of an Erasmus+ Further Education Vocational Education and Training (VET) project.
The 20 SERC students combined workshop-based learning with practical application of digital marketing techniques, including the usage of graphics software, editing and preparing photographs, writing and publishing articles, social media campaign planning and the use of landing pages to form part of a digital media strategy.
As well as honing vital technical skills, the students immersed themselves in Spanish culture by learning Flamenco and Salsa, as well as gaining an appreciation of life in Tenerife. The students reported feeling that they are now more independent and confident and have improved their presentation, communication and team working skills. They also reported feeling more able to adapt to changing situations.
Catherine Anderson, SERC Deputy Head of the School of Hospitality, Management, Tourism and Languages commented, “This was a valuable experience for the Travel and Tourism students. They have gained so much from the two-week project, learning in a different country, and it has given them a true insight into the Digital Marketing work and helped the development of interpersonal skills.”
The students returned with a broadened cultural experience and an enhanced CV which will increase their employability. As a group, they concluded that the experience will encourage them to travel more and consider working in a different country in the future.
