SERC Fire and Security Apprentice

The finals will be hosted by the Construction Industry Training Board at Dundrod, and will take place on Wed 4 May 2022.

The apprentices are Matthew Blair (Ballinderry Upper), Alex Wallace (Newtownards) and Taylor Rollo (Newtownards) - employed by Building Protection Systems; Ronan McConnell (Belfast) and Jonny Hamilton (Bangor) - employed by Atlas World, James Curry (Banbridge) -  employed by Beacon Fire & Security, Scott Kerr (Carrickfergus) - employed by Gareth Hanna, Jake Beckett (Moira) - employed by Jim McAteer, and David Fairley (Dromore) - employed by Heaney Interiors.

Robin Hamill, SERC Fire & Security Lecturer said, “This is a tough competition, but the apprentices are all up for the challenge. They all know how to manage their time and work methodically through the task on an unseen brief, similar to what they might expect to encounter in the workplace. They are fantastic ambassadors for SERC and their employers.

“The apprentices are not only competing for a SkillBuildNI title, but the opportunity to go forward to the WorldSkillsUK.”

Robin added, “We are also delighted to welcome some high-profile representatives from the fire and security industry who will be travelling from England to take part in the judging: Trevor Jenkins, National Training Manager at Security Systems and Alarm Inspection Board; Darrell Gilmour, Skills for Security; and David White, Chairman and Helen Hilton, Business Manager, from the Institute Fire Safety Managers.

Robert concluded, “Competitions such as SkillBuildNI and WorldSkillsUK give our students the opportunity to challenge themselves, network with their peers and to get a broader view of the industry in which they are carving out careers.”
