On 15th November 2018, Lady Sylvia Hermon MP visited SERC Public Services students for a talk on the day to day role of an MP followed by a question and answer session. These students are currently studying a unit on government, policies and the public services and therefore decided to invite their local MP to meet with them. They were delighted when she graciously accepted and thoroughly enjoyed her company.

Lady Hermon answered numerous, charged questions which made for interesting discussion along with some light-hearted humour. She was able to facilitate debate on topical issues, helping students gain a better understanding of how central government works.

The students have already visited Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for question time as part of Local Democracy Week. They have also attended a live recording of BBC Top Table with Stephen Nolan and are visiting NI Assembly for a debate with MLAs.

Students who have never learnt about politics before at school are now becoming politically aware and active which is vital for entry into public service roles.
