SERC Level 2 Hairdressing student Steven Jones recently ran a successful fundraiser for the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children (RBHSC) though the Helping Hand Charity.

Steven saw the great work the hospital does when his daughter was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and from then he wanted to do a fundraiser to try and give something back and support the hospital. His fundraiser consisted of 65 miles of walking throughout the month of May as well as a wear yellow day at the college on 27 May. In the end Steven raised a total of £440 for Helping Hand.

Steven spoke to us about the fundraiser: “It went much better than I anticipated, the walk was a struggle for me personally, I have issues with my back, but I pushed through knowing it was for a worthwhile cause. The wear yellow day was fantastic, the support from staff and students was amazing and I can’t thank them enough for getting involved. The experience from start to finish was amazing, it’s been so nice to see people pulling together.”

He added “The funds raised will be used by Helping Hand, they work closely with the RBHSC not only with the CF unit but all the departments in the hospital. I’m happy that this money goes towards helping any of the sick children in their care.”

Speaking of the support he received from the college, Steven said “SERC has been such an amazing supporter for this event; the SU officers helped out and got involved, there was a news article to promote the event, and social media posts to promote it too, I was also invited onto Bangor FM to raise more awareness. I received an email of support from the principal, and messages from the SU along the way. I couldn’t have done this without the support of SERC and the SU.”

He concluded “I just want to thank everyone who gave their time or made a donation to help out. Every single donation from £5 to the anonymous donor who donated a whopping £100. I’m extremely thankful to every single one of you. The generosity from everyone has been beyond amazing. I look forward to working more with the SU in September. From my family, we thank you all so much.”
