Staff Committed to Safety of the College Community at SERC

Learning Support Officer at South-Eastern Regional College (SERC) Heather Wells has been extending her skillset by joining the team making health and safety equipment to ensure that everyone arriving on campus for the new term feels safe.

Heather, who is also a part-time Art lecturer, has taken on additional work over the summer cutting Perspex sheets and manufacturing protective screens to get College classrooms ready for the academic year starting this month. The first students will be on the College’s campuses from 7 September with a phased re-opening running through the following days and weeks.

Almost 40,000 protective screens have been produced in-house thanks to the technical skills of the SERC workforce and the industry standard equipment on site.

The screens, which will be used to increase the safety of students and staff working in shared classrooms and computer suites, are just one element in a massive operation to increase health and safety measures in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic. One-way systems have been introduced and signage produced (also in-house) to support social distancing and hand sanitisers are situated throughout all SERC sites. Wearing masks in public areas is mandatory and the College is giving out branded, reusable cotton masks to all new enrolments as well as keeping a supply of disposable masks available for any student, staff or visitor needing one.
