Enrolling on a course at SERC means taking the opportunity to further your studies alongside room to develop yourself. That proved to be the case for Matthew McArthur (25), who moved from sports to communications and landed himself a career as a recruitment consultant.
Matthew, from Bangor said, “I wanted to learn but found school to be very challenging. I was interested in sport and wanted to study something I was motivated to learning more about, so I progressed to SERC where I successfully completed the Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas in Sport and Exercise Science.” Click here for more information.
“Going to college filled me with confidence and helped me to understand my potential. I had support for my dyslexia, and the focus on coursework, together with a more engaging approach to knowledge suited my way of learning. Looking back, I had a truly great experience, enjoyed every moment and made friends for life at SERC.”
Matthew progressed from SERC to Ulster University where he completed a BSc in Communication, Advertising and Marketing. He is now a recruitment consultant with Hays Speciality Recruitment. He continued, “Throughout my three years at SERC, my communication skills and confidence improved. I started to understand the way I learn best which unlocked the door for university, something that I never thought was possible for me. I owe SERC a lot for the position I am in now and the person I am today.”
He added, “As a specialist recruitment consultant, I focus on helping employers to hire, attract and retain staff, in order to allow their business to succeed and grow. I create opportunities for people, to help them find their next career move and to understand their potential. My role is very much about relationship building, with both businesses and people. I work as a lifelong partner for both."
When asked what advice he would give to someone wishing to enter the recruitment sector he said, “Speak to people in the industry to find out what it is all about. Soft skills – communication, leadership, teamwork, organisation, adaptability etc - are becoming increasingly important to employers, and many are hiring on this basis now. I believe more employers will soon hire based on a person’s potential rather than experience.”
He concluded, “School is not for everyone, and the same goes for university. I believe the courses and skills you obtain in further education prepare you for the future world of work and give you countless opportunities.”
There is still time to apply for further education or higher education courses commencing September 2022. Unlock your future #BetterOffAtSERC
