Samantha Edgar (20) from Moneyrea was not sure on what steps to take after her A-Levels, after some thought and exploring her options Samantha decided to enrol on the HND Level 5 General Engineering course at SERC.

Samantha spoke about coming to SERC after studying her A-Levels “I was exploring options to bridge the gap between secondary school and university, having looked at sitting an extra A Level I found the HND courses at SERC and thought it would be the best fit for how I wanted to develop my knowledge and skills further.”

“Leaving secondary school and going to college was a daunting thought for me. I was welcomed at SERC with open arms by both the teaching staff and my classmates. It is a very supportive and nurturing environment which allowed me to develop skills as an engineer that I will carry for life.

Speaking about her course and time at the college Samantha said “I enjoyed the practicality of the course which involved lots of teamwork and communication. There were many opportunities opened to me as a student including working closely with student companies to interface with customers, and product design and production.

“I was very fortunate to be involved in the student company Cutting Edge. The skills and experience I gained are invaluable and the friends I made are for life. This year I have been involved in a variety of projects which have challenged and developed my engineering skills.  I was also fortunate to be part of our class’ team which competed in the final of the Student Enterprise Showcase with the project ‘Plastic Fantastic’ which was looking into the recycling of plastic within the college.”

Samantha concluded “I loved the course and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to further their knowledge in the field. From my experience the engineering courses are very well rounded, and the teaching team are very knowledgeable and supportive. I am saddened to be moving on as I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying with the Engineering team."
